Parrots make entertaining and lovable pets. Because of their high intelligence levels, their ability to mimic, and their sensitivity to the world around them, proper parrot care is essential in providing a happy and healthy home for a parrot companion. Regardless of what parrot species you choose, cage care, a well balanced diet, proper grooming, and love are all necessary aspects of good parrot care.

Different species of parrots require different care but, for all parrots, proper nutrition is vital in maintaining a good quality of life. Most parrot diets are very similar. In general, parrot diets consist of fresh fruits and vegetables, parrot pellets, and a high quality of vitamin enriched parrot seed mix. Owners also need to change their parrots water everyday.

Keeping a parrot's good sized cage well maintained, clean, and entertaining is another way to provide a parrot friend with the best care possible. Depending on the variety of parrot chosen, a proper sized cage, large enough for them to stretch their wings and play in, is necessary. A parrot needs to feel comfortable and at home in their cage. Because they are sensitive and stress easily, a parrot's cage must be routinely maintained. Fresh newspaper, daily, should be placed in the bottom of the cage. Also, daily, the cage should be wiped down, removing any droppings that may have accumulated on the sides, toys, or perches of the cage. Once a month, it is important to disassemble the cage and wipe down all surfaces with mild, soapy water.

With the many parrot varieties on the market, it may be difficult to choose which parrot companion is best for you. The African Gray Parrot has become a popular choice because of their large vocabulary range and mimicry abilities. Research must be done prior to purchasing a parrot. A very important aspect of parrot care is understanding the huge commitment that having a parrot as a pet is. On average, a medium to large sized parrot can live 50-80 years. They are a lifelong commitment, and understanding that they will require patience, love, and attention is the first step in properly caring for a new parrot friend.

When most people think about parrot care they don't consider grooming. Parrots do require a decent amount of grooming throughout their entire lives. Their nails and beaks never stop growing. These can be clipped every three to four weeks. Overgrown nails can get caught on perches or toys. Most bird owners also have their birds wings clipped every few weeks to prevent flight. In the wild, parrots take rain showers to keep their feathers in good condition. Owners can bath or mist their parrots daily with clean, fresh water using a water bottle.

Lastly, but most importantly, love, patience, and quality time should be the basis of excellent parrot care. Research and understand a parrot's needs. Their happiness, health, and safety depend on the quality of care that their owner's provide. Love your parrot friends. Care for them properly. Spend time bonding with them. You'll be glad you did, and it will earn you in return a valuable best friend for life!
